FLINT, MI — Heatwave, a funk band that scored hit singles including “Boogie Nights” in the 1970s, will help open the Flint Water Festival during the July 4 weekend.
The Friends of Berston Field House announced the free Heatwave concert is scheduled to start at Berston, 3300 Saginaw St., at 7 p.m. Friday, July 2, the first day of the three-day festival, which also includes a carnival, charity auction, and fireworks at 10 p.m. on Independence Day.
Heatwave is best known for its songs “Boogie Nights,” “Always and Forever,” and “The Groove Line.”
The band has had many incarnations since it was formed by brothers Keith and Johnnie Wilder while they were stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army.
Friends of Berston, Flint Institute of Music, and RICH Kids Inc. are partnering to present the sixth annual festival, which promotes awareness of the water crisis and raises funds to pay for the replacement of water pipes inside homes in the city.
A news release from the Friends of Berston says the Elliott’s Amusements carnival will take place from noon until 10 p.m. July 2, 3 and 4.
Bottled water giveaways sponsored by JUST Water, Liquid Death, and National Clean Water Collective are also planned.
