CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) – On Saturday, there is a way to support parents suffering from postpartum depression in Indiana. The “Climb out of the Darkness” community walk and fundraiser is happening at the Village of West Clay in Carmel.
The event takes place on June 26 at the University Green from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The event hopes to raise awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, the climb brings the community together to shine a light on a darkness that people often don’t speak about. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth. One out of seven new moms and one in 10 new dads suffer from perinatal mood anxiety disorder.
People will be able to share stories of hope and celebrate recovery as they gather together to raise money, raise awareness and give a voice to those who no longer have one.
Participants can walk together to symbolize the climb out of the darkness. The organization provides direct peer support to families, train professionals and provides a bridge to connect them.
Funds raised by Team Hamilton County will go to support the Postpartum Support International chapter in Indiana, which provides scholarships to train Indiana mental health care and postpartum support providers in the latest best practices in perinatal mental health care.
Climb Out of the Darkness is free, but donations are encouraged.
People can bring their own food, however donuts, bottled water and pizza will be provided.
The event includes a family-friendly walk with a raffle, vendors and a performance by children’s music artist Mr. Daniel. The walk route will be on paved sidewalks, so strollers and wagons are welcome.
Parking is available in any open space throughout the Village of West Clay.
