FORT MYERS, Fla. – Liquor stores in Fort Myers saw an uptick in sales over the holiday weekend.
Some said their increased profit extended through Monday as customers prepared for the upcoming storm.
Managers said customers are coming in waves. Many buying a few bottles to wade out the weather.
“People are going to buy more when a hurricane is here, but a tropical storm – it was a moderate sale. But people bought pretty well and were really surprised,” said Thomas List, owner of List Distillery.
Those familiar with severe weather say this is common practice.
“When you’re stuck inside and there’s nothing to do. Storm parties. We do them here every single year when a hurricane hits or whatever’s coming our way. We all get drunk and have a party,” said Jaxon Reid of Fort Myers.
Many buying alcohol say they will be enjoying drinks on their couch and encourage others to do the same.
“If you’re in a safe place, somewhere that’s rated for storms, stay in your home. Just relax. Don’t go out there,” said Reid.
