OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Girls inc of Omaha is among 10 nonprofits receiving the grant, each worth $25,000.
“We’re really grateful to receive it from Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. this is a big deal to Girls Inc.,” said Director of Operation Tracy Brown.
Girls inc is a nonprofit that provides education, basic health, housing, and hygiene. It says it can use the grant to help those experiencing childhood obesity and become more healthy.
“We would then be able to buy from farmers straight fresh to the table and provide fresh vegetables and fruit for the girls here at Girls Inc.,” said Brown.
Recreational activities are already provided inside the facility like basketball and dancing. Tracy brown says being active is certainly a part of becoming healthy but it all starts with your diet.
“We have the physical activity and with this grant from Children’s Hospital, we’re able to bring in the healthy foods which will be combined with the physical activity,” said Brown.
The girls will be provided healthier food and will learn how to prepare it in the kitchen.
“Giving the girls those skills that they need to prepare the food and this is a life long skill that they can take with them into adulthood,” said Brown.
