Biden and Emhoff visited COVID-19 vaccination events around the state, starting with a tour of a vaccination site in Dallas with former Cowboys star Emmitt Smith and ending with the Astros’ vaccination clinic, which gave fans free tickets to the game if they got a shot at the clinic set up inside the stadium’s Union Station.
After visiting the Astros’ vaccination site and chatting with people in line and others getting their shot, Biden and Emhoff took a seat in the stands with military members and front-line workers.
Biden also had a light-hearted moment with Emhoff, who graduated from a high school just outside of Los Angeles and is a Dodgers fan. Biden complimented an Astros fan on their replica Astros World Series ring, but knew it was a touchy subject for Emhoff.
“They beat my team, but that’s OK,” Emhoff said.
The pair didn’t stay for the whole game, which was probably good, because things got ugly for the home team near the end.
Even with some fun at the game, it was a business trip. About 61 percent of adults in Texas had received at least one shot as of Tuesday, according to the Centers for Disease Control. While far from the worst in the country (Mississippi is at 46 percent), it’s still behind other comparable big states. More than 80 percent of Texans 65 and up have received at least one shot. In Harris County, more than 50 percent of its residents ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated.
“The numbers are low here,” Biden said at Minute Maid Park. “… The President, the Vice President, Doug and I care about the American people, about their health. So that’s why we’re here. That’s why Doug’s here.”
